Why App Tracking Transparency Feature of Apple Is Not Beneficial for Facebook and Google

We, as smartphone users, get ads. Sometimes we get irritated. Companies generate revenue by placing an ad as you are not paying anything for using Facebook or Google; now, some premium subscriptions are there for users, but still, the free versions are available, and that is because you are listening and viewing the ads in the free version.

Companies always want to give users better options to choose from. They do research and surveys before bringing new features to the platforms sometimes the users don’t like certain features and company take back these features in the further update. Apple, as a leading premium smartphone brand, always brings new and innovative features for the users. Even the Apple users choose Apple for their innovation and security, which is unmatchable, but the other big platforms with billions sometimes find it challenging to manage with the new features which are available on the latest updates; the recent update by Apple is nothing less than a nightmare for the companies like Facebook and Google as their data gathering is getting hampered by the Apple’s iOS 14.5 update.

Apple’s iOS 14.5 updates have made it difficult for companies like Facebook and Google. The main reason for this is its app tracking transparency feature, which the company has introduced with this new update. This feature allows users to avoid tracking themselves through the third-party app and prevent iPhone from collecting data. Facebook strongly opposed Apple’s update, and the company said users’ exit from tracking could affect their target advertising and affect their revenue and small businesses.

Given that about 4% of iOS users in the U.S. have opted to be tracked by third-party apps, it’s safe to say that Apple users like and appreciate this control over their data. Although it is said that Facebook will not track the user when this third-party app is out of the track, it may be wrong. According to reports, Facebook can still record some of its users’ data. Facebook is doing this through user activities, and it is a method of data collection that cannot be included in Apple’s app tracking transparency. The good thing, though, is that you can control it yourself and stop it.

How Facebook Track Users

This example allows you to understand how this is happening. When you upload a photo from your iPhone to Facebook, it can contain geotags that can inform Facebook or someone else about your location. HotHardware reports that if you are tagged in a photo on Facebook and the image has a geotag, and Facebook can automatically consider it a location for that time. This data can be shared between Facebook and its clients, and registering for a business means giving your data to Facebook.

You Can Stop Facebook Tracking

If you want to turn it off, first turn off geolocation in your Android and iOS devices. In this case, if you post a photo on Facebook, it will not contain a geolocation tag. You can also turn off tagging by going to Facebook’s settings so that people can’t tag you without your permission. You’ll then need to approve all tags manually, and people won’t even be able to tag you in vain. At the same time, you can also untag it by going to your old post.

However, the point to note here is that you can’t completely close this data exchange unless you stop using the app or use VPN. If you don’t use VPN, Facebook can track your device’s IP and use it to find out your location. Although this data tracking is not limited to Facebook, it tracks your data whenever you use an online service today.
